Miners in uranium and other mines are exposed to radioactive gases, as well as to ore dusts containing radioactive materials and external gamma and beta radiation. This report describes the principles and techniques by which radiation hazards may be controlled in mines. Although primarily directed to the uranium mining industry, the information may be applied to all mines. Appropriate dose equivalent limits and annual limits on intake are given and are related to the derived limits and reference levels used in monitoring. Techniques for control of exposure are discussed together with the monitoring of levels of exposure and medical surveillance of the workforce. This report supersedes ICRP publication 24.
