PM&R Accepted for Abstracting and Indexing in MEDLINE®

Philadelphia, PA, July 8, 2009 – Elsevier, a world-leading publisher of scientific, technical and medical information products and services, is pleased to announce that PM&R -The journal of injury, function and rehabilitation (www.pmrjournal.org), the official scientific journal of the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (AAPM&R), has been accepted for coverage by MEDLINE, just six
months after its launch in January 2009. Under the guidance of Editor-in-Chief Stuart M. Weinstein, MD, Clinical Professor of Rehabilitation Medicine at the University of Washington, Seattle, and an internationally renowned Editorial Board, this monthly, peer-reviewed, scholarly publication has a clinical focus, presenting an array of topics pertinent to physiatrists (rehabilitation medicine physicians), to those in other related medical disciplines, as well as to a wider international readership.
“It is particularly gratifying that a fledgling journal such as PM&R has already been recognized for its contribution to the advancement of physical medicine and rehabilitation,” commented Dr. Weinstein.

MEDLINE abstracting and indexing of PM&R will start as soon as possible and will be retroactive to Volume 1/Issue 1. MEDLINE is the U.S. National Library of Medicine’s premier bibliographic database containing over 16 million references to journal articles in life sciences with a concentration on biomedicine. PM&R was evaluated and selected for inclusion based on a stringent review process conducted by the Literature Selection Technical Review Committee, an NIH-chartered advisory committee of external experts. MEDLINE records of PM&R articles will also be accessible via PubMed®.

Amsterdam, 29 June 2009 – Elsevier, the leading publisher of scientific, technical and medical information products and services, today announced the highlights of its journal impact factor performance in 2008. Elsevier overall saw 75% of its journal impact factors (IF) increase from 2007 to 2008. According to the 2008 Journal Citation Report® published by ThomsonReuters, Elsevier journals took the #1 position in 51 categories (of 229 in total) across all of the sciences and social sciences.
In addition, 30 Elsevier journals got their first IF this year. Some of these journals received very impressive scores including two Cell Press journals:   Cell Stem Cell (16.826) entered the Cell Biology category ranked 6th (of 157 journals), while   Cell Host & Microbe (7.436) entered the Microbiology category ranked10th (of 91 journals). Another impressive result in its first year is   Materials Today (12.929), which is ranked 4th in the Materials Science, Multidisciplinary category (of 191 journals).
This year there were 182 Elsevier journals that increased their IF by more than 50% over their 2007 scores. All three The Lancet speciality journals improved their IF this year.   The Lancet Infectious Diseases increased to 13.165, placing it at the #1 position in the Infectious Diseases category.   The Lancet Oncology (http://www.thelancet.com/journals/lanonc/issue/current) rose to 13.283, an increase of over 1 full IF point from the 2007 IF. Finally,   The Lancet Neurology increased by 40% to 14.270, thereby retaining the #1 position in the Clinical Neurology category for the 5th year running.
Other Elsevier journals continue their long-running trend of increased IFs, in particular   Biomaterials (increasing yearly since 2003) and   The Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology which has shown consistent growth over the past five years.

The impact factor is a measure of the frequency with which the average article in a journal has been cited in a particular year. The impact factor helps to evaluate a journal’s relative importance, especially when compared with others in the same field.

SLA Centennial Observance Honors Cell, The Lancet and other key Elsevier journals

Amsterdam, April 6th 2009 – Twenty journals published by Elsevier (many on behalf of renowned societies) have been nominated for the Special Library Association’s (SLA) Top 100 Journals in Biology and Medicine. The Top 100 list is compiled by the 680-plus members of the Biomedical and Life Sciences Division (DBIO) on the most influential journals in biology and medicine over the last 100 years. The “Journal of the Century” and the winners of this prestigious award will be announced on Tuesday, June 16th, at the Centennial Conference of the Special Libraries Association in Washington DC.
 
Established in 1909 to serve librarians specialized in business, government, social agencies, and academia, the SLA is now an 11,000-member professional organization of subject specialist librarians, information managers, and publishing industry representatives. Each topical division has contributed a Centennial-themed event throughout the year. In 2008, DBIO convened an international panel of nine eminent subject experts to compile a ballot for an electronic poll of SLA members concerning the 100 most influential journals of biology and medicine over the past century of SLA’s existence.
